Hobbiton? Rohan? The Shire? - No, homes for ageing hobbits will be in Warwick

IT seems the fantasy novel The Lord of the Rings has provided the inspiration for the name of a new Warwick housing scheme due to open in 2013.

In JRR Tolkien’s famous book the name Rohan refers to a purely fictitous realm. But it’s pure bricks and mortar that will hold up the 42 extra-care apartments in All Saints Road which are to become known as Rohan Gardens.

The two-bedroomed flats, for rent or shared ownership have been built by Warwickshire County Council in partnership with Housing 21, Warwick District Council, Willmott Dixon and Davis Langdon.

The author does have links with Warwick. He married local Edith Bratt in St Mary Immaculate RC Church in 1916 and some have suggested the spire of St Mary’s Collegiate church may have provided the inspiration for Minas Tirith in the Lord of the Rings.
