Greater freedom under City Deal

THE “fantastic” industries of south Warwickshire will be given a chance to grow and grow stronger after being included in a new wave of ‘City Deals’, says the area’s MP.

Coventry and Warwickshire is among 20 new areas to be included in the scheme - which will give them greater independence from Government, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has announced.

Eight major cities outside London are already part of the deals, which are designed to boost jobs and growth.

Reacting to the news, Warwick and Leamington MP Chris White said: “We have a great heritage. We have some fantastic names in Leamington and Warwick, such as Denis Eagle and Aga Rangemaster.

“With Warwick University and Warwickshire College, we can really get the skills and tailor the supply and demand of what the industry needs much better.

“Part of the plan is to train 5,000 new engineers over the next two years.”

Each area will be able to set its own budget on an area of specific interest and spend that budget under its own terms.

Mr White said: “This is really going to be an area for which people are recognised nationally and internationally for what they can deliver.”

Warwick District Council leader Michael Doody said: “The deal will mean we can put more money into stimulating businesses in town centres, which will mean more jobs for our residents. I would like to see areas such as the Parade in Leamington enhanced by new businesses moving in.”
