David and Goliath online

A DAVID versus Goliath bookshop campaign to persuade retail giant Amazon to pay Corporation Tax has now gathered 83,000 names on an online petition.

Frances and Keith Smith, who run Kenilworth Books and Warwick Books, are due to meet Labour politician Margaret Hodge, chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, early next month.

The husband and wife team began their online petition in a bid to get multi-nation companies like Amazon - which sells discounted books online throughout Europe - to pay a part of their profits in UK taxes. At Warwick Books in Market Place, Mr Smith said: “An Early Day Motion has been postponed as we are shortly due to discuss the issue with Margaret Hodge. In the meantime we hope people will write to their MPs about the advantage Amazon has simply by having its head office in Luxembourg.”
