PLANS to build an ‘enterprise hub’ which could create up to 14,000 jobs on green belt near Baginton have been approved by Coventry City Council.

Warwick District Council’s planning committee will vote on Wednesday on the other part of the £250 million Gateway business park scheme which falls within its boundary.

The scheme requires consent to be given by both authorities but if district councillors vote against the plans then Coventry and Warwickshire Development partnership - the applicant - will now have the right to appeal the decision.

The plans have been met with widespread opposition, with the district council having received 800 letters of objection and only six letters of support.

Baginton, Bubbenhall and Stoneleigh’s parish councils are among the objectors along with the Campaign to Protect Rural England and Friends of the Earth.

Kenilworth MP Jeremy Wright and English Heritage have also raised concerns.

One objector, David Wintle, said: “Warwick District Council is blindly walking into this nightmare scenario, guided only by the LEP. The only way to prevent it is to say no to Gateway.”

Following doubts raised about claims made by the partnership that the scheme would create 14,00 jobs, the district council commissioned an independent survey to investigate whether the claim as backed by evidence.

But planning officers are recommending that councillors give their consent.

In a report sent to councillors on the planning committee, officer Rob Young said: “The widespread benefits will incorporate not just the expectation of up to 14,000 jobs, but also economic, social and environmental benefits. They are significant and substantial. While we do not underestimate the importance of the Gateway’s green belt status, we believe that these benefits amount to very special circumstances which, in our view, demonstrably outweigh the harm caused by the proposal.

Wednesday’s meeting takes place at Leamington town hall from 6pm.
