County says no changes to crossing required

COUNTY council officers are remaining firm in their decision not to replace a zebra crossing in Warwick’s High Street, despite complaints by blind and partially-sighted people that the present “shared platforms” are dangerous.

COUNTY council officers are remaining firm in their decision not to replace a zebra crossing in Warwick’s High Street, despite complaints by blind and partially-sighted people that the present “shared platforms” are dangerous.

The county’s chief transport officer Roger Newham said a Stage 3 Safety Audit has already been carried out and any problems identified with the four platforms crossing High Street and Jury Street have either been fixed, or will be in the near future.

In a letter to Terry Smith, engagement manager for Guide Dogs for the Blind, Mr Newham wrote: “I can confirm there are currently no plans to provide any additional crossing or change the status of the crossings provided.

“There will be a Stage 4 safety audit commissioned in approximately 18 months.”

But Mr Smith says: “By refusing to replace the pedestrian crossing the council is not only compromising safety but excluding blind people from an area of central Warwick.

“Any fresh safety audit will not give an accurate picture because few, if any, blind or partially-sighted people will use this part of town.

“They are effectively being excluded. The county council has paid lip-service to consultation but is simply not listening.”
