Contradictions in budgets at Shire Hall
STAFF working at a children’s centre and nursery in Warwick have still not heard how the cuts to the county council’s new budget will affect them.
But there are also doubts about the nature of the cuts, reported in last week’s Courier.
The Labour group is warning that a £4 million saving represents a 15 per cent cut and, if implemented, would affect facilities and staffing levels at places like the council-run Warwick Nursery School in Coventry Road - which was rated “outstanding” by Ofsted inspectors - along with the children’s centre split between Newburgh and Westgate Primary Schools.
Cllr June Tandy, the Labour group leader, said: “Children’s centres are largely used in areas where they are needed and there are areas of need in Warwick and Leamington just as there are in Nuneaton, where I live.
“If there are cuts in budgets then staff numbers at nurseries across the county could be reduced and mean the number of children able to attend will drop.”
But council leader Alan Farnell maintains he is investing an extra £5.5 million into children’s services overall.
