Contaminated spirits on sale in Warwick

TWO police community support officers who caught a man believed to be selling alcohol - including contaminated whisky - and suspected fake Viagra pills in Warwick town centre, have been praised for their action in detaining the suspect, who turned out to be wanted in Essex.

Women PCSOs Stephanie Bernardes and Pam Trott approached the man’s van on December 8 and asked to see his pedlars’ certificate.

When he could not produce one they called for a fast response vehicle and made sure he was unable to leave the scene.

It was quickly established the man was wanted by Essex police in connection with an alleged theft.

Essex Trading Standards officers were also keen to speak to him.

Acting Sgt Trent McMurray said: “The van was seized and was found to contain not only alcohol but a large number of tobacco products believed to have been smuggled into the UK.

“There was also some contaminated, possibly counterfeit, spirits.

“We understand some of the whisky seized was previously sold to a customer elsewhere in the UK and drinking the contents caused him serious internal damage.”

Warwickshire Trading Standards officers also recovered some Sildamax tablets - unlicensed Viagra pills- as well as the alcohol on which no duty appeared to have been paid.

Sgt McMurray added: “This was a good result to all accounts in keeping our communities safe from harm. If the PCSOs had not detained this man it could have resulted in a danger to human health.”

The man was sent back to Essex police for questioning.
