Can you add horticultural magic to Warwick station?

WARWICK and Leamington MP Chris White is trying to even up the horticultural scores within his two town constituencies.

The MP has been so dazzled by the glorious
herbaceous borders that greet passengers at Leamington’s railway station that he is now appealing for green-fingered volunteers to help improve the look of Warwick station.

In fact the sloping, terraced gardens of the spa town have just been placed in the “outstanding class” by the Royal Horticulture Society for the Heart of England region. And Leamington as a whole won a large town Britain in Bloom gold medal this year compared with Warwick’s nearly as impressive silver-gilt.

Judges in the Horticulture Society’s category entitled “It’s Your Neighbourhood” particularly praised the work of the local voluntary group who banded together some years ago as the Friends of Leamington Station.

It’s as a result of this recognition that Mr White, who regularly catches the train down to the House of Commons from either Leamington or Warwick, has been holding conversations with a Chiltern Railways services manager.

To that end he says: “I wonder if one or two gardeners from Warwick would put their names forward to see what could be done at Warwick with a small budget?”

Judges for Britain in Bloom have already commented that Warwick has some amazing residential gardens and quite remarkable floral displays at pubs and businesses and that local firms took up all the available hanging baskets that could be provided.

They also said that the immaculate gardens at the Lord Leycester Hospital were a credit to the saff.

One disgruntled Warwick resident has commented that the station could do with its own public loo before a garden.

But anyone interested in helping should ring Mr White’s office on 315888.
