Village takes on speeders behind the wheel

The camera was put up in Station Road “in direct response” to concerns raised by residents about the speed of vehicles travelling along the 30mph 
road.

A survey by Warwickshire Police found that at least 80 per cent of all drivers in the village were exceeding the 30mph limit, with 15 percent going faster than 42mph.

Action has now been taken by the Safer Roads Partnership’s community concern programme, but speeds will continue to be monitored to help solve problems in the area.

Anna Higgins, from the Safer Roads Partnership, said the action was only taken in direct response to concerns, and is an example of how community involvement can make big changes.

“We are launching a new community concern enforcement site in Claverdon to address the high level of concern in the local community,” she said.

“The speed data we collected in the area highlighted unacceptably high speeds.

“With a residential area nearby, residents are understandably concerned about the speed of traffic.

“We hope that the presence of a speed camera will encourage drivers to change their behaviour and drive at a lower, safer speed.

“This will help to improve the quality of life for people living in the area and improve the safety of the road for all those who use it.”

Speed data will be collected while the site is in operation to assess the impact upon traffic speed and driver behaviour.
