It’s the personal touch that makes members of Warwick Lions Club different from other community organisations, says this year’s president Neil Chisholm.
And that’s certainly the appeal the club had for one of it’s latest recruits, Caroline Farrimond, who joined after first meeting several members organising last year’s beer festival in the town which raised some £7,000 towards local and international causes.
Caroline said: “Neil has been a member of various Lions groups over the past 32 years but it was new to me. I didn’t even realise women were allowed to join.”
In fact it is only in recent years that women have been readmitted to the club which spread across the world after starting in Chicago in 1917.
But the welcome is certainly warm locally, and Caroline would love to see a few more women and men turning up to find out about the Lions when she helps host an open evening at the Warwick Arms Hotel in High Street at 8pm on September 18.
She said: “I was new to this area and went along to the beer festival on the racecourse where I got chatting to members who told me that as well as contributing to international eye camps and well-digging programmes they were supplying furniture and offering practical help to local people.
“People like young mums or families who have moved to the town and found life has suddenly gone pear-shaped on them. The rent may be due and at the same time the cooker breaks down.
“We always visit a home to check out the circumstances. It’s the hands-on approach that gives the Lions their philosophy of ordinary people doing amazing things.”
Neil, who lives in Boleyn Close, Warwick, says he finds reward enough in seeing the smiles on children’s faces when he helps organise the annual fun day in St Nicholas Park. Others help with carols at the castle or the annual tin collection.
He said: “We all have different strengths and there’s a strong social element to our meetings on the first and third Wednesday of every month. Why not come along and find out more?
