Leamington charity must find new site in face of housing plans

A proposed new housing development near Leamington is forcing sustainability charity Action 21 to find a new home - and it has less than a month to do so.

Action 21 is urgently looking for a new site for its Re-Useful Centre.

The 18-year-old charity opened its Re-Useful Centre in Ramsey Road in Sydenham five years ago, after Warwick District Council stopped subsidising the organisation and it lost the tender at its former Prince’s Drive site.

But after Deeley Properties Ltd and Orbit Group Ltd put forward outline proposals to build 147 new homes on land in Sydenham that includes its Re-Useful Centre site, Action 21 has decided to move in case the proposal is approved - and its trustees feel that the proposal is moving forward so rapidly that the charity must move out by the end of April.

Chairman of the board of trustees John Armstrong said: “The staff and volunteers at Action 21 have enjoyed their time at Ramsey Road, while providing a valuable and much-needed service to the local community, many of whom are on low incomes and benefit from purchasing items at the Re-Useful Centre.

“We hope our volunteers and our loyal expanding customer base will all join us at our new location. But we do not know where that will be yet, and would very much appreciate any suggestions.”

The charity, for which sales made at the Re-Useful Centre are a major source of income, is looking for 10,000 sq ft of warehouse space with parking space, ideally within two miles of Ramsey Road.
