As baking fever is set to grip the nation once again this summer, Leamington is playing host to a bake-off of its own.

While the popular BBC show, The Great British Bake-Off, is about the return for another series, BID Leamington and Sweet As Cake Emporium - which is based in the town, have announced a new element to this year’s Food and Drink Festival: the Leamington Bake Off.

Jenny Hudson, chef director and founder of Sweet As, will lead the judging of the contenders, who will be split into three age categories. She will be joined by Peter Knibb, head chef and proprietor of Restaurant 23 in Hamilton Terrace, and Laura Hamilton, chef and proprietor of Queans Restaurant in Dormer Place.

Prizes will include treats from Sweet As, a bakery skills afternoon with Jenny, an afternoon tea for two at Restaurant 23 and dinner for two at Queans.

Jenny said: “As a judge, I will be looking at the skill, creativity and passion that has been put into the bake and of course, the taste. And who knows, we might find the next Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood!”

Contenders must register in advance by completing an entry form from www.leamingtonfoodfestival.co.uk

Five to 11-year-olds will be asked to make a traybake, 12 to 16-year-olds a decorated celebration cake and over-16s a traybake and decorated celebration cake. All entries must be brought to the Food and Drink Festival, which takes place at the Pump Room Gardens on September 5 and 6.
