The strike is in opposition to the contracts proposed by health secretary Jeremy Hunt.

Addressing Parliament in February, he said the previous contract drawn up in 1999 was “not fit for purpose” and criticised the BMA for not being flexible in previous negotiations.

Warwick Hospital’s medical director Charles Ashton said that during the industrial action, consultants and other staff who are not taking part were working to ensure there was no impact on any of the emergency services.

While there have been previous strikes by the junior doctors recently, this was the first ever one that involved no emergency cover.

The dispute between is over the their new contract which doctors fear will put patients’ safety at risk, while the Government argue it will help enforce a new and safe 24/7 NHS.

On Wednesday, junior doctors from Warwick were offering free CPR training in Leamington to help offer skills to members of the public.
