He will lay a wreath at the war memorial in Church Street, during a short open-air ceremony starting at 11.30am.

Sadly last year’s event had to be moved into St Mary’s Church at late notice due to forecasts of heavy rain which, in the end, did not materialise.

Cllr Dhillon says the service not only commemorates past victims of genocide during the Nazi regime but is also a way of reminding everyone that they have a continuing responsibility to resist the evils of racism and religious bigotry.

He said: “This service is in remembrance of the millions of victims who suffered and died at the hands of the Nazi regime as well as the mass murder and brutal oppression of people in Cambodia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Rwanda, Kosova and Darfur.

“Genocide is not limited to the distant past, as the murder and oppression of the people of Sudan and Iraq shows so clearly.”
