1,000 homes approved in Warwick and Leamington

Planners have given the green light for just over 1,000 new homes to be built - with nearly 800 of them south of Warwick and Leamington as part of a major urban extension.

During a long debate on Tuesday night, permission was granted for up to 785 dwellings on agricultural land at Lower Heathcote Farm off Harbury Lane, Warwick.

It was the first of two major applications submitted by local builders Gallagher Estates, who would also create a country park to act as a buffer zone between Whitnash, Warwick and Bishops Tachbrook, as well as a retail and community hub, children’s play area and sports fields.

The company would also be looking for permission to build a new primary school.

Access to the new development would be via two roads off Harbury Lane and another off Europa Way.

The controversial application - which was agreed by seven votes to three against - is the first of two being made for each side of Europa Way and to the south of Gallows Hill and Harbury Lane.

Also agreed on Tuesday was an application for 76 flats plus five bungalows for the “active elderly”, aged 55 upwards, by Willmott Dixon Housing.

This would follow the demolition of sheltered housing at Featherstone Court and The Sun pub in Tachbrook Road,
Leamington.

Bloor Homes was also successful in its application to build 150 new homes at Oakley Wood Road, Bishop’s Tachbrook, to include more public open space plus a new turning point at the rear of the school for children being dropped off by car.

But an application to change the rules on the amount of carbon emission for 150 homes being built in Fieldgate Lane, Whitnash, was refused.

There was also an unanimous vote in favour of 60 homes on land off Wellesbourne Road, Barford, which involved demolition of a former police house to create an access route.
