Eight-year-old Harbury girl cycles 140 miles for charity

She may be small, but a Harbury Primary School pupil has completed a feat that many adults would struggle to achieve by cycling 140 miles for charity.

While most children were enjoying some free time over the half term holiday, Imogen Campbell was cycling 20 miles each day on a coast-to-coast journey from Whitehaven to Sunderland.

She has so far raised £1,000 for Save The Children and Cancer Research UK and is expecting her total to further rise.

Imogen completed the cycle over seven days with her dad Ian, who helped her train as well, with her training routes including a cycle around the 25-mile path that circumnavigates Rutland Water in Leicestershire.

The pair had support from Imogen’s mum Katie-Anne, who transported their supplies in a car for three of the days, but for the other four days they lived out panniers fixed to the back of Ian’s bike.

Katie-Anne said: “This was all her own idea. She chose the ride and the charities herself as her way of helping those that don’t have as much as she does. As I am sure you can imagine I am a very proud mum.

“Imogen started cycling around the house on a toddler bike when she was 18 months old and then moved straight on to a proper bike without any stabilisers at a very young age.

“She loved doing this coast-to-coast cycle and has already planned to do another charity ride from the London Eye to the Notre Dame in Paris next year.”

She added: “Harbury Primary School has been really supportive of her and all her class mates sponsored her.”
