High Court judges, clergymen and civic dignitaries were among those parading in their robes in Warwick on Monday.
Warwickshire High Sheriff Anna Trye led representatives from the legal world from the Judges’ lodgings in Northgate Street to St Mary’s church for a service marking the start of the judicial year.
The tradition dates back to the Middle Ages when judges prayed for guidance at the start of the legal term. This ceremony has taken place in Warwickshire for the last 250 years, since the completion of Warwick Crown Court in 1758. This October also marks the 250th Anniversary of the first sitting of the assizes court in Warwick.
More than 300 people attended the service, including local school children, the Master & Brethren of Lord Leycester Hospital, lawyers and community representatives.
Proceeds from the service will be donated to the High Sheriff’s charity, Crimebeat, which works to prevent young people becoming involved in crime.
