A DARK and disturbing depiction of a Brothers Grimm tale takes the stage at a Coventry theatre next week.

After a successful launch in 2012, StrongBox Theatre is bringing its new production, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, to the Ellen Terry Theatre in Jordan Well on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7.30pm.

Inspired by Jeanette Winterson’s novel, Sexing the Cherry, the company present a dark yet poignantly playful interpretation of the story, which focuses on twelve sisters who have been torn apart and forced into marriage.

They have all led a frustrating and dismal life with their husbands and are ready to rebell and attempt to reunite and live as they once were.

Audiences will join them and their ‘Broken Hearts Band’ on an absurd journey through the past as part of their struggles to do so.

The Coventry-based company, which is in the running to go forward to the National Student Drama Festival in Scarborough later in the year, are promising an “intoxicating blend of sensuous storytelling and live music”.

The play is recommended for over-14s only. For tickets, which cost £5 (£3 concessions), email strongboxtheatre@gmail.com
