I COMPLETELY disagree with Tracy Davis on her comments about Coventry Airport (Postbag, last week).
While I appreciate the obvious noise of a small jet taking off at any time of day, people have to appreciate that Coventry Airport has been mainly a freight airport using older propeller more inefficient and "unclean" aircraft, and the aircraft opera
te much earlier in the mornings.
I have heard one flight at 5.30am and it has woken me up because it's slower and cannot gain height as quickly as a jet, and I live in the centre of town and have never heard a Thomsonfly jet, or if I have it's just gone unnoticed as background noise along with traffic, emergency service sirens and people going to work.
As for the effect on house prices, has anyone heard of the people living around London Heathrow, or even Birmingham, complain about house prices as a result of the airport recently? We are all complaining about house prices in the current climate.
If the airport gets a proper terminal it will increase the house prices in the area as, depending on the routes set by the airline or airlines, the local area will become more of a commuter belt and attract people to live here.
I firmly believe that if Birmingham has any credibility as a supposed second city, making its airport truly international by opening direct gateways to the west coast of USA, South America, Far East and Australia, and making Coventry the European and short haul airport, it would increase the credibility of the region as a whole. - Anthony Deas, Warwick Terrace, Leamington.
