The closest to us, and probably the most well known, is Saint Patrick's Day for Ireland. The Scots have Burns night where they celebrate the Scottish poet with the toasting of his words culminates in the eating of haggis.

Then why cannot PM Brown and the Labour Party with their new values of Britishness give us our own patron saint's day? A day recognised throughout the UK and made into a public or bank holiday.

St George is the patron saint of England. His emblem and ours, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England. It was adopted by Richard the Lionheart and brought to England in the 12th century. The king's soldiers wore it on their tunics to avoid confusion in battle against the Arabic states.

St George's Day is on April 23, in a sense this is England's National Day.

William Shakespeare had Henry V rouse his troops into battle with a shout of 'Cry God for Harry, England and St George'.

A great leader Winston Churchill once wrote "There is a forgotten, nay almost forbidden word, which means more to me than any other. That word we should never forget is ENGLAND."
