Torrys is excellent, and as another reviewer has said, can be cheaper, especially if you're after small amount of say, screws. Very good ordering-in service if they haven't got quite the right thing. Well worth supporting this local business, although I suspect they do OK - it's always busy!

Aladdin’s Cave is a pretty good description. Very helpful and rarely beaten. Support them if you can, they are like shops used to be.

If they havent got it, you will probably struggle to find it anywhere else – I know, I routinely stretch their ability – there is always a box with it in somewhere in the Aladin’s cave. Fun to mooch just to see how much stuff they have which you didnt realise you actually needed. If you want to be treated like a muppet and enjoy the “if it aint on the shelf mate we aint got it” then go to B&Q or any of the other well knows but if you really want something go to Torrys first but leave additional time because you will enjoy the ability to look and ask questions. You might also find that the price is actually less than the chain gang charge anyway.

Little bit like Arkwright’s in TV’s Open All Hours. Brilliant old style proper shop for people who want to maintain or repair things rather than chucking them out to replace with new tat. I wanted to try a mattock for size before buying and this was the place to do it. Good to see that there are young ‘apprentices’ working there as well as old hands.

Imagine a DIY store where new items are added but nothing is ever removed. Now imagine a maze of rooms full of incredibly useful things, some of which you never knew you wanted or needed!
Torrys is an amazing store where you can buy just about anything. They offer key cutting and timber cutting but you can also buy a short length of pipe, odd batteries, peculiar bulbs and an excellent range of washing up bowls to fit any sink.
Staff are helpful and have an encylopedic knowledge of where things are. As a customer I sometimes feel I should be leaving a trail behind me to find my way back to the exit!
Shops like this need to be preserved. The only downside is the parking which is on the street and sometimes tricky. If you aren’t buying anything big then going by bus is probably best.
