TUBS of flowers and a line of hanging baskets should welcome railway passengers to Warwick station next year thanks to a new group of gardening volunteers.

A meeting is due to be held in mid-January as a result of a chance conversation between local MP Chris White and Chiltern railway managers about the barrenness of their platforms compared with Leamington station.

At Leamington there has long been a thriving ‘Friends’ of the station group which regularly wins awards whenever the Britain in Bloom judges are in town.

But in Warwick, despite the best efforts of the Rail Users’ Association, a similar group never got off the ground until Mr White used the pages of the Courier to appeal for a group of voluntary gardeners.

As a result local horticultural businessman Martin Carty - no stranger to awards after recently being voted the best national mums’ employer - volunteered his services along with several others.
