Bridgeman sculpture to be unveiled at Coventry Cathedral

A SCULPTURE by a late Leamington artist will be displayed in the memorial ruins of Coventry Cathedral next year.

John Bridgeman’s Seeking Sanctuary is the first sculpture of its kind to be dedicated to refugees.

It depicts a figure of a refugee woman holding a child as she flees.

Mr Bridgeman’s daughter Jane said her father’s inspiration and sympathy for the refugee came from his recollection as a first year art student, seeing a painting by Harry Becker - himself the son of immigrant parents - depicting 16th century Dutch refugees requesting asylum in the town.

Canon David Porter, director for reconciliation ministry, said the sculpture would give the ruins a new significance and continue the Cathedral’s message of peace and reconciliation in its Golden Jubilee year.

Seeking Sanctuary will be unveiled at the ruins in May.
